Places we may go

These are the anchors of the week. Which one we shoot on a given morning depends on the swell, the tide and the forecast, and deciding that together is part of what you learn here.

This list is not exhaustive and it can change. A swell that arrives early, a road shut by the weather, or a sky clearly worth chasing somewhere else are all good reasons to spend a morning in a place that is not on this page.

This date is full, but the requests are what shape the calendar: tell me if it interests you.

There is no day-by-day itinerary. There is a rhythm.

We don’t publish a fixed day-by-day programme, because the weather decides where we should be. What stays the same every day is the shape below; what changes is where we point the cameras, and we choose that together the evening before.

Dry

No rain in the forecast. We work the two ends of the day properly and use the middle for the coast itself: the villages, the mines and the road between them.

05:50SunriseLow light along the stacks, tide going out
09:00BreakfastWe look at the morning’s files together
11:00TheoryThe topics of the week, at the table
13:30On the roadA tin mine, a harbour village, a garden above the sea
16:30Post-production, forecast or planningWe choose the spots together
20:30SunsetWarm light on the cliffs, long exposure on the swell

Wet

Rain passing through. Not a day to stay in: wet rock holds the light, and the sky usually gives ten good minutes to whoever is already standing there.

05:50Sunrise under cloudCloud can take colour long before the sun appears
09:00Breakfast, dry the gearDry the gear, look at the files
11:00TheoryExposure when the light will not hold
13:30On the road, out of the rainA nice pub, a fishermen village, time together
16:30Post-production, forecast or planningRadar in hand: where will the gap be?
20:30Sunset where it opens, then dinnerWe move to wherever the sky opens

Stormy

Wind and rain with no break in it. The day moves indoors and to the sheltered coast: rock, water and detail, and the desk work that improves everything else.

08:30A later start, breakfastNo sunrise to chase, time to rest
10:00Theory, long sessionFilters, long exposure, mastering skills
13:00Post-production, forecast or planningYour own files, one by one
15:30On the roadOut of the weather: a village, a museum, a pub
20:30Out only if it breaksOtherwise dinner, and an early night

What we work on

  • Scouting and planning: reading maps, tides and forecasts
  • Weather: reading the cloud, and making the most of what the day gives
  • Composition, and the discipline of seeing the frame before shooting
  • Exposure with the histogram, in light that changes fast
  • Filters: graduated, polariser, ND
  • Advanced long exposure
  • Post-production, on your own files, during the week
  • Image review, one by one
